Abstract Expressionism (late 40’s – 50-ies. XX century) is a stage of development of abstract art. Various heated objects – the sun, lamp filament, the heated metal, gases, oil lamp flame, fire etc., which are named light primary sources, radiate the light. Under the influence of light waves, with fluctuations of different frequency, the person has various light and color sensations. Light extends waves of certain length. The length of wave is distance on which extends fluctuation for one period, i.e. for time necessary for one full wave. The length of light wave is designated by the Greek letter λ, and measured in micrometers. (Micron).

The visible spectrum, i.e. the waveband perceived by the person, is limited by waves in length approximately 396-760 microns. Some researchers consider that the eye of the person is capable to feel light beams in limits of 802-950 microns, however sensitivity of eye to extreme visible beams in hundreds times are less, than to light beams with length of wave 396-760 microns.

Direct light of primary sources (the Sun, etc.) falls on surrounding subjects and the objects, thus opaque subjects absorb part of beams, and reflect part of them. Color of opaque subject is defined by light, which from it is reflected. At transparent subjects or having in the structure gleams or micropores (for example, fabrics) part of beams is reflected, part is absorbed also the part is passed. As a result, all subjects and objects become source of reflected light, and enough considerable, as for example, the Moon, the Earth, heavenly bodies, etc.

Thus, all subjects and objects in the nature are illuminated by both direct, and reflected light.

Newton has formulated for the first time thought on difficult structure of white sunlight. If to put glass of trihedral prism on way of solar beam, instead of white light beam there will be color strip from the various colors, named spectrum. At studying of the phenomena of contrast from the scientific point of view allocate two aspects of problem – psychophysiological and aesthetic. The conclusions received at studying of the phenomena of contrast by psychologists and physiologists, can form objective scientific basis for studying of the theory of contrast in art practice as one of means of art expressiveness in painting.

The artist in creative practice studies laws of displays of contrast: he observes and studies, first, contrasts in constantly changing nature and, secondly, on image plane (paper, cardboard, canvas) contrast influence of two or several color tones, or dabs. Subject of studying for artists is also dependence of contrast on the areas of color calling this phenomenon. Contrasts are divided on two groups – achromatic (light) and chromatic (color). Artists often are faced the phenomena of achromatic, or light, contrast, which essence consists also that the light stain seems lighter against a dark background, and dark on light is more dark, than it is actually. In the first case contrast name positive, in the second, case – negative. Conditionally clearly, surrounded with more light or dark tone, name “reacting field”, and background – inducing field.

Researches of simultaneous light contrast have revealed that the reacting field always changes lightness more considerably, than inducing that at excessively big brightness the contrast phenomenon weakens that the effect of simultaneous light contrast depends both on absolute brightness, and from difference of brightness reacting and inducing field. At very low or high distinctions in brightness contrast is absent or is rather insignificant. Simultaneous light contrast depends on the size of the areas of reacting and inducing field. The less reacting field, the more strongly owing to contrast it lightens. At equal brightness the big area of reacting field always seems more darkly of the smaller area of inducing field.

Simultaneous light contrast depends also on configuration of reacting field (the circle, ring, square or the letter on the same background on an equal illumination are accompanied by contrast of various force) and from distance between reacting and inducing fields. Force of contrast usually decreases at distance increase between contrasting fields. Simultaneous light contrast is shown not only in dimness or lightening of reacting fields, but also in seeming change of their sizes. The light stain against a dark background seems more than it is actually and on the contrary, the dark stain on light background seems less. Seeming change of the linear sizes at simultaneous light contrast is called irradiation. Leonardo da Vinci, who also paid attention to the irradiation phenomenon, said: “From the subjects equal on darkness, size, figure and distance from eyes, that will seem smaller, which will be visible on the brighter or white field”.

Aesthetics of cubism practically represents specific modeling of cognitive process, based on basic for cubism principle “negations of naive realism”, the artist assuming refusal of a support on visual perception of the subject world. The given principle underlies proclaimed cubism program “struggle against sight”, i.e. struggle against non-critical acceptance of phenomenology of a video series as a knowledge basis in general and comprehension by the artist of painting, in particular (the world is deformed, it is not visible to its essence and it cannot be visible, i.e. the phenomenological reduction cannot apply for an adequate method of knowledge of the world): under A. Glez’s and Z. Mettsenzhe’s formulation, “the eye is able to interest and tempt mind with the elusions”, but at the heart of this temptation – is an optical illusion. As wrote Z. Bruck, “feelings deprive the form, the spirit forms. Authentically is only that spirit makes”. In this context, naturally, by an estimation of cubism, that “wishing to reach ideal proportions, artists, without being more limited to something human, represent us products more speculative, rather than sensual” (G. Apolliner). In this context it is indicative that R. Lebel names his monography devoted to cubism, “The seamy side of painting”, underlining thereby intension of cubists on penetration for a phenomenological number. For example, Berdyaev wrote about P. Picasso: “He, as the clairvoyant, looks through all covers… Further away to go deep inside, and there will be no materiality – there already internal system of the nature, hierarchy of spirits”, – and the tendency of this movement conducts to an exit from a physical, material flesh in other, higher plan. Thus, instead of disorder of sensual experiences Monet and Renoir cubists promise to the world something stronger, not illusory – knowledge” (L. Reyngardt). In evolution of philosophical bases in cubism can be allocated two stages. An initial presumption of aesthetic concept of cubism – is the presumption destruction of object as it is: by estimation of R. Delon “until art will not be released from a subject, it condemns itself on slavery”. Thus, according to cubistic strategy of art creativity, “it is not necessary even to try to imitate things. Transcendental objects do not exist at all. They exist only through us” (Bruck).

Mission of the artist in this context is articulated as clearing of (and by means of it is also others) of “a banal kind of things”. As fundamental credo cubism accepts the formula of “rather decorative painting and picturesque scenery!” (Z. Mettsenzhe). In this context cubism postulates as the method in unusual way articulated “lyricism” or “lyricism inside out”, which has been understood by cubism as a method of clearing of consciousness from slavery of the subject world reached by means of program calling by the artist of feeling of disgust for a subject of its creativity. Lyricism can be considered as a basic paradigm for early cubism. Its theoretical contribution can be summarized as follows: the cubism considers a picture as the object creating lyricism, – lyricism as the unique purpose of this object. All kinds of freedom are permitted to the artist to create lyricism. Practically it means exit of cubism for fine arts limits – to art abstract: if visually observable world can illusory, interest of the artist should be concentrated to the original (intrinsic) world, i.e. the world of pure geometrical forms.

According to a reflective self-estimation of cubism “for us a line, a surface, volumes – not that other as shades of our understanding of fullness that is not presented by appearance of object and all external is reduced in cubistic vision to one denominator of weight, namely – its geometrical basis. Recently I have opened a color pencil for myself. I suggest to you also to get accustomed to this material more attentively.

Working with small children, I offered them cooler pencils for the first acquaintance with color. Then, very soon, passed to development of more serious materials – a watercolor and gouache. Also I was always confident that color pencils – is frivolous, insignificant and superficial technics…

Now, after my experiments with a color pencil, I should recognize that there are no insignificant materials and the technician in the fine arts in general!

So, what was found out at work with color pencils?

Specific features:

1. The color pencil does not maintain very big sizes of a format.

2. Possesses a color transparency.

3. Complexity and a color subtlety are reached by imposing of several colors.

4. Inherently, it nevertheless the drawing material and consequently, of course, it is necessary experience to draw by a regular pencil.

The elementary sketch.

The color pencil is erased with rubber very bad, therefore at first I do preliminary sketches on some simple paper and I bring editing, without being afraid to damage a surface. Primary drawing I make with a regular pencil, at first planning the basic forms, then defining borders of a light and shade. It allows not putting color on the places, which have been not intended for a covering.

If I accept result, I move the sketch on a paper for the main work. Remember that at this stage drawing does not require to be in details, the field of vision will be inevitably left by set of details: therefore postpone details to a work stage in color.

If you only start to master color pencils, choose a paper the most unpretentious and simple in use, and, except that, capable “to sustain loading” of corrections of errors. For example, the firm pencil is badly put down on a rough paper, and soft easily crumbles and breaks about a relief of a paper with well expressed texture. Therefore, it is better to use a qualitative paper with average texture indexes to practice and get acquainted with all nuances of technics of a color pencil. Naturally, it is necessary to experiment with a various paper.

My favorite kind of paper is “wipe paper”; its velvety surface will give to a pencil warm, gentle disposition. But as the paper relief can keep considerable volume of color, I can control the rich, saturated stains of color.

Irrespective of ability of a paper to “forgive” to the artist discrepancy and mistakes, it is not necessary to overload it with color. At an initial stage of studying do not put on a basis pigment dense layers. The problem consists in learning gradually, and strictly supervising, to build color.

In spite of the fact that a little updating is possible with the help of eraser, for example, for softening of separate places, the pencil pigment will be inevitably smeared on a paper if it has been put with a dense or deep layer. Draw easy lines to exclude necessity of correction of a dense layer of a pigment. Then you can improve work with new paint layers for a long time.

Let’s speak about technics elements, at first.

The pencil leaves on a paper a thin line and it is impossible to cover the big area at once. Sometimes these not complete parts of drawing have huge psychological influence on the artist; therefore I recommend to divide work into fragments and to make them consistently. Such approach justifies itself, as I perceive each part of drawing simply as a combination of light, average and dark values. Here is necessary certain practice. Eyes should learn to see object not only as a subject, but also as set of different color stains. To your surprise, such method will remove a lot of problems, especially in the beginning work, and difficult work at any difficult drawing will give huge pleasure.

I do not use a white pencil for light or white places: it will give effect of grayish, pale shades, and I need accurate contrast of light and dark casts. And I simply leave untouched paper whiteness.

After allocation of these stains, I start to put color layers, developing scale from light to the dark. I pass one color on another until I will achieve a necessary shade. It is a unique way of mixing of paints in the technician of a color pencil (without use of solvents).

In the nature there are few of one-color objects. I don’t use only one pencil for the decision of a concrete color stain: each place represents a combination of paints of two or more colors.

Even if your “object” has absolutely black color — try to find characteristic texture-tonal drawing and to define light and dark stains. Then you should choose paints, which are harmoniously combined and are close to each place of color. I have established a rule for myself: always to mix a paint of primary color with paints, at least, of two other pencils. Only after that it is possible to consider developed tone. At the given approach search of the most true and correct shades raises special visual interest. Creating in drawing expressive effects, sometimes it is necessary to use about 50 various pencils.

It is impossible to avoid underpainting on difficult places.

Finishing the given stage, it is possible to begin laborious work on nuances of a light-to-dark modelling, observing sequence from light to the dark. Changing pencil pressing, create a wide range of values, avoiding effect of “polishing” of a surface at which paints of light shades with effort are put on dark so that wax binding of a pencil is softened and forms luster.

Final strokes.

Having felt that I am close to finishing stages of work, I remove sheet on one and a half – two metre and I analyze its coloristic decision, contrast and properties of values from various sides and points of view. I bring changes and additions. Then, if I will consider necessary, I delete all casual traces and stains, and also errors with eraser. All work from beginning to end occupies from 15 till 30 hours.

Try elements of my technique of drawing in color pencils, irrespective of character of the chosen object. There is a unique way to penetration into secrets of this – it is attentive research, experiments with pencil pressing, ways of drawing of paint layers and a variety of a paper. Availability and the spontaneous nature of color pencils sometimes create false representation about their brilliant and unlimited possibilities, for example, in creation of the most detailed realistic works. However, it is possible to tell with confidence that color pencils are capable to inspire any artist to feel huge pleasure from a successful combination of elements schedules and painting.
